Woodville Cemetery

Martin Van Buren, president of the United States, on September 1, 1835, issued a patent to Stephen B Munn for the northeast quarter of Section 2, township 2 NRTW of the 4th p.m., in Adams Co., IL. Containing in no less than 13.32 acres. From this its proprietor Issac N. Norris, laid out the village of Woodville. It was about forty-three acres of land, of which one acre has been set aside for a burying aground. Filed - July 15, 1836

The village of Woodville burned to the ground and was never rebuilt. The first burial was in 1836. An infant became ill and died as it was traveling west with its parents, who had stopped at the hotel in Woodville to spend the night.

I have been to the Cemetery and could not find the Headstone of this child. Many of the stones are very old and hard to read. After doing much research I came up with other family members of my husband, James Howard, son of Leander and Pauline (Fackler) Howard. I took pictures of all the headstone I thought might be in someway ancestors of the Howards and Crabtrees. I have added, Treach, Lovelace, Hobbs and Prather. There are a couple of names I have not been able to connect with his ancestors. I have included them on the list, for someone might be interested in these headstones. Hopefully next time I go I will take pictures of all the headstones and document them for you. If you travel on the new highway from Quincy to Carthage there is a sign now saying Historic Woodville Cemetery and it is just a short way to the cemetery. I am not a professional just someone in search of the past, so if I have errors please excuse me. Jan Howard
