~ ~ Coin Minted in New Orleans ~ ~

The above half-dollar coin was minted in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1861 probably between January and April of that year.  The U. S. Federal Mint located in New Orleans was the only mint to serve both the Federal and Confederate governments.  When Louisiana seceded from the Union, the building was seized and used to mint Confederate money.  The mint was closed after Union forces captured New Orleans.
