Halifax County was formed in 1752 from Lunenberg County. Originally, it included what is today Pittsylvania, Patrick and Henry Counties; and parts of Franklin and Floyd Counties. The present day boundaries were decided in 1766. It was named for George Montagu Dunk, Second Earl of Halifax, who was the First Lord of the Board of Trade (1752). The County Seat, since 1800, is Halifax.
